The story itself wouldn't make for an exciting game (unless it was a puzzle game I guess) but the concept is pretty fascinating, and spooky to boot. Imagine working in a company where the product of your research was intended to kill hundreds of thousands of people, and an orb with no moving parts that you could hold in your hand killed two people already so you nick-name it the "Demon Core". I mean, when have you ever had occasion to name something "Demon Core" at your work and really mean it?
